Music
Back to barracks!.
- Pet Sounds (The Beach Boys)
A genius work of harmonies and melodies, made all the more impressive by the fact that the composer could not, and still cannot hear in stereo. A+ for effort and execution.
- Nevermind (Nirvana)
An all-out sonic assault by a man who clearly was experiencing his last years on Earth. R.I.P. Cobain, you were a troubled, poor kind soul. A
- Revolver (The Beatles)
It's the Beatles. It sounds like the Beatles, it feels like the Beatles, do I need say more? Yellow Submarine alone makes this album worth the revolution (ha!). A
- The Velvet Underground & Nico (The Velvet Underground & Nico)
A strikingly experimental work produced and written by the king of the avant garde, Andy Warhol. Sex, drugs, the roots of punk are all here, and it sounds great. A+
- What's Going On (Marvin Gaye)
A soulful series of ballads by a guy who many kids of a certain age know as the voice of singing raisins. Powerful in emotion, I give this an A+
- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles)
The Beatles again, with a whole host of great new tracks. I have to give this the edge over Revolver with an A+, it just feels more essentially Beatles!
- London Calling (The Clash)
Our first double-ender, I'm not too familiar with the story behind this one. However, it is a great collection of proletariat anthems that are as relevant today as they were back then. A
- OK Computer (Radiohead)
The beginnings of the Internet age brought with it a whole host of fears, many of which were predicted by this album, and all of which came true. A+
- Blonde on Blonde (Bob Dylan)
A fun series of folk ditties by the king of American folk music himself. I find his other albums a bit better tho, so I will give this one a B.
- Exile on Main St. (The Rolling Stones)
I have no idea why this is the highest rated Rolling Stones album. I couldn't tell you any of the tracks off the top of my head if you held a gun to my head. It's just the same-feeling electric guitar shreds throughout, and it all kinda blurs together for me. Still, a C+ for helping to usher in the age of metal.
